Selection Criteria
The USTC Admissions Office and relevant academic departments assess each application comprehensively across several key criteria. Academic excellence is evaluated through the applicant’s previous degrees, grades, and overall academic record, reflecting their ability to succeed in rigorous graduate-level study. Research potential is judged by the quality, originality, and clarity of the applicant’s statement of purpose or research proposal, demonstrating their readiness for independent inquiry. The strength of recommendation letters from academic referees provides insight into the applicant’s intellectual capabilities, work ethic, and suitability for advanced research. Language proficiency—in English or Chinese, depending on the program—is considered essential to ensure effective communication and academic performance. The relevance of the proposed research to USTC’s academic strengths and institutional priorities is also taken into account, highlighting the applicant’s alignment with the university’s research focus areas. Finally, overall merit and competitiveness of the application, along with alignment with specific funding levels (A, B, or C), determine the applicant’s suitability for admission and scholarship support.
