The Centre for Studies in Religion and Society (CSRS) Graduate Fellowships at the University of Victoria welcomes applications from graduate students for various one-year fellowship appointments commencing September 1, 2026. The Centre supports research fellows working on projects that involve the scholarly study of religion in relation to any aspect of society and culture, both contemporary and historical.
The fellowships are meant primarily for graduate students (both MA and PhD) at the University of Victoria but may also be awarded to students from other universities whose projects fall within the Centre’s research mandate. The awards are intended for students who have completed coursework and will be at the writing stage of their graduate thesis or dissertation during the period of the fellowship.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this fellowship, applicants must:
- Be a graduate student (MA or PhD) at the University of Victoria (students from other universities may also apply)
- Have projects that fall within the Centre’s research mandate on religion and society
- Have completed coursework and will be at the writing stage of their graduate thesis or dissertation during the fellowship period
- For one-year MA program students: Must be in the writing stage of their programs
- Students who received a previous CSRS award at the MA level may only reapply after they are registered in a PhD program
- PhD students may hold a CSRS fellowship only once
- Cannot accept multiple centre fellowships at the university simultaneously (due to dedicated office space provision)
- Must notify the Centre if granted multiple awards before commencing the CSRS fellowship
- For research involving human subjects: Must obtain approval from the UVic Human Ethics Review Board

Selection Criteria
The CSRS Program Committee evaluates applicants based on the originality, clarity, and feasibility of their research; its integration of religion within broader social and cultural contexts; and its alignment with the Centre’s interdisciplinary themes. Academic merit is equally important, with emphasis on a strong academic record, quality of previous research, supportive references, and demonstrated ability to complete the proposed work during the fellowship period.
