The Ernst Mach Grant – Worldwide 2026 is a prestigious research scholarship program funded by the Republic of Austria through the Federal Ministry of Women, Science and Research (BMFWF) and administered by OeAD-GmbH, Austria’s Agency for Education and Internationalisation. 2026 NLNG Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme for Nigerian Students

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be Postgraduates pursuing a doctoral/PhD programme outside of Austria
  • Be Postgraduates and postdocs wishing to pursue research in Austria with a view to an academic career who completed their studies at a university outside of Austria after September 30, 2024
  • Be Postdocs who are working as researchers at a university outside of Austria
  • Must have consent of a lecturer at the Austrian target university to supervise the applicant academically (letter required)
  • PhD students must provide confirmation of participation in a PhD programme at home university
  • Postdocs must provide confirmation of employment at home university
  • Research project must be completable within the scholarship period (max. 9 months)
  • Maximum age 35 years (born on or after October 1, 1990)
  • Very good knowledge of English and/or German
  • Must NOT have lived/studied/pursued research/pursued academic work in Austria in the last six months before taking up the grant
  • Must be continuously present at place of study/research in Austria
  • Cannot engage in gainful employment (except marginal employment within research/arts at universities/research institutions – max EUR 551.10 per month in 2025)

Selection Criteria

Selection is highly competitive through a multi-stage process: formal requirements examination (complete documentation including two university lecturer recommendation letters not older than six months, consent from Austrian university supervisor, passport copy, graduation certificates, and PhD/postdoc status confirmation), general application plausibility (coherent research plan completable within scholarship period with clear academic objectives), expert assessment and evaluation (research quality, academic merit, potential contribution to field, and alignment with Austrian research strengths), and final decision by BMFWF.
