The 2026 University of Manchester Humanitarian Scholarships are designed to support individuals who have been forced to flee their homes as a direct result of armed conflict and who face serious barriers to accessing higher education. Set up in 2022 as a testament to the university’s deep commitment to social responsibility, the programme offers up to six fully funded undergraduate scholarships for 2026 entry, covering tuition fees, living expenses, and visa costs. Through this initiative, the University of Manchester affirms its belief that talent and potential should never be extinguished by conflict, and that education can be a powerful tool for rebuilding lives and futures.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following:

  • Must be at serious risk due to war or conflict, and must have been forced to leave their home country (or move within it) in the last three years as a direct result of conflict
  • Must currently be unable to start or complete a university degree due to their circumstances
  • Must have never previously studied in the UK or EU
  • Must have applied for an undergraduate course starting in September 2026 at the University of Manchester via UCAS
  • Must be currently living outside the UK or EU — applicants currently residing in the UK or EU are not eligible
  • Must be able to demonstrate a genuine motivation for their chosen course of study and show good academic achievement despite the challenges faced
  • Must be able to meet the academic and English language entry requirements of the chosen course — proof of English language proficiency is not required at the application stage but must be met if an offer is received; Duolingo English test results are not accepted
  • Eligible courses include most 3-year undergraduate degrees and foundation year options; Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, and Architecture are not eligible

Selection Criteria

Qualified students for the 2026 University of Manchester Humanitarian Scholarships will be selected based on a holistic review of each application, with no interview required. The selection panel will assess the seriousness of the applicant’s humanitarian situation, the strength of their academic record despite the challenges faced, the clarity and sincerity of their motivation for their chosen course of study, and their ability to meet the academic and English language entry requirements. Results will be communicated to all applicants — successful and unsuccessful — by 29 May 2026 via email, and all decisions are final.
