The University of Michigan offers limited but meaningful scholarship opportunities for international students through various schools, colleges, and departments rather than through centralized university-wide programs. Federal financial aid is not available to international students with F-1, F-2, J-1, J-2, and G-series visas, who must demonstrate proof of sufficient financial resources as part of their visa application. However, individual schools within U-M provide merit-based scholarships and financial support including the LSA International Student Scholarships (College of Literature, Science, and the Arts) for newly admitted students renewable for 2-4 years, College of Engineering Need and Merit Awards for continuing undergraduate engineering students (minimum 3.0 GPA), Jackson and Muriel Lum Endowed Scholarship for UM-Shanghai Jiao Tong Joint Institute students, School of Social Work merit scholarships for MSW and MA applicants, and various graduate program-specific funding through individual departments.

Founded in 1817, the University of Michigan is one of America’s premier public research universities, consistently ranked among the top 25 universities globally and #3 among public universities in the United States. Located in Ann Arbor—repeatedly ranked as one of the best college towns in America—U-M offers a vibrant campus community of over 51,000 students including approximately 7,000 international students from more than 130 countries. The university comprises 19 schools and colleges offering over 280 degree programs across all disciplines, with particular strengths in engineering, business (Ross School of Business), medicine, law, social work, public policy, and liberal arts.

Selection Criteria

University of Michigan scholarship selection for international students is primarily merit-based due to federal regulations limiting financial assistance to non-citizens. Evaluation criteria emphasize academic excellence demonstrated through high school/undergraduate transcripts and GPA (typically minimum 3.0 for continuing student awards), strength of admission application materials, potential to contribute to U-M’s diverse academic community, and program-specific achievements. For LSA International Student Scholarships, the selection process evaluates newly admitted students’ overall academic profile and potential for success at U-M.
