The LSHTM First Generation Scholarship (Distance Learning) is a fully funded postgraduate award offered by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine to support outstanding students who are the first in their family to access higher education and who wish to pursue a Master’s degree through one of LSHTM’s six flexible online MSc programmes. Offered under LSHTM’s broader Strategy to Promote Access and Widening Participation, two scholarships are made available each academic year, covering full tuition fees for the duration of the MSc programme. The scholarship was established in recognition of the unique barriers faced by first-generation university students particularly those from historically underrepresented backgrounds and reflects LSHTM’s deep commitment to creating an inclusive academic community where all talented students, regardless of their socio-economic circumstances, can thrive.
The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is one of the world’s leading public health universities and a centre of excellence in research, postgraduate education, and professional training in global health and tropical medicine. Part of the University of London, LSHTM has been delivering world-class online learning programmes since 1998 making it one of the pioneers of distance education in the health sciences and today its six distance learning MSc programmes attract students from across the globe in disciplines spanning epidemiology, global health, medical statistics, public health, and infectious diseases. LSHTM consistently ranks among the top universities in the world for public health, and its research directly influences health policy and practice at the highest levels of global governance including the World Health Organization and national health ministries worldwide.

Selection Criteria
The LSHTM First Generation Scholarship selection process is designed to identify applicants who have demonstrated extraordinary personal resilience and academic potential in the face of significant socio-economic barriers. All applications are assessed first against the core eligibility criteria, most critically the first-generation higher education criterion. Eligible applicants are then invited to complete a supplementary question form in which they are asked to articulate the specific challenges and barriers they have encountered throughout their educational journey, and to explain how they have navigated and overcome these obstacles.
