The Scuola Normale Superiore PhD Admission Competition is one of Europe’s most prestigious and competitive fully funded doctoral opportunities, open to both Italian and international students from all countries who wish to pursue advanced research in humanities, sciences, or social sciences at one of Italy’s most elite academic institutions. Every admitted PhD student automatically receives a fully funded scholarship covering tuition fees, a grant for board and accommodation, and additional funding for research activities including work conducted abroad, with a reserved place in each PhD programme specifically set aside for candidates who obtained their qualifying degree from a foreign university. There is no application fee, no IELTS or TOEFL requirement in many cases, and the entire application process is conducted online, making this one of the most accessible fully funded doctoral opportunities in Europe for talented international researchers.

The Scuola Normale Superiore, founded by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1810 as a sister school to the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, is one of Italy’s most prestigious and internationally recognised research universities, consistently ranked among Europe’s elite institutions for doctoral and advanced research training across the sciences, humanities, and social sciences. Located in the historic city of Pisa, with a second campus in Florence, SNS admits only a small number of exceptional doctoral students each year and is renowned for the exceptional quality of its research environment, its distinguished faculty, its world-class library and laboratory facilities, and the remarkable career trajectories of its alumni, who go on to leading positions at top universities, research centres, international organisations, and advanced professional institutions worldwide. An SNS doctoral degree is one of the most valued academic credentials in European academia.
