The Georgia Southern University International Merit Scholarship is a competitive award designed to recognise and support outstanding international students who demonstrate good academic standing, financial need, and a commitment to the university and community. Valued at approximately $13,000 per year, the scholarship waives the out-of-state fee charged to all international and out-of-state students, saving selected scholars around $52,000 over four years of study. A limited number of scholarships are awarded each year to new international freshmen or transfer students in F-1 Visa status beginning in the fall term, with early application strongly encouraged as availability is restricted.

This scholarship will provide the following to its recipients:
- Waiver of the out-of-state fee valued at approximately $13,000 per year
- Total savings of approximately $52,000 over four years for freshman recipients
- Reduced tuition and fees of approximately $3,700 per semeste (from approximately $10,500 per semester) based on 15 credit hours
- Renewable for eight semesters (four years) for international freshmen and four semesters (two years) for international transfer students
- Opportunity to receive additional academic scholarships offered by Georgia Southern University to incoming students

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following:
- Must be a new international freshman or transfer student in F-1 Visa status beginning in the fall term
- Must be officially accepted for enrollment to Georgia Southern University before being considered for the scholarship
- Must demonstrate good academic standing, financial need, and a commitment to the university and community
- Must maintain an overall 2.5 GPA to renew the scholarship from year to year
- The scholarship is not available to students beginning in the spring or summer terms
- Currently enrolled international students are not eligible to apply

Selection Criteria
Scholarship applications are reviewed by a scholarship committee only after the applicant has been officially accepted for admission to Georgia Southern University, with selection based on demonstrated good academic standing, financial need, and a commitment to the university and community, as assessed through the required 500-word essay describing the applicant’s educational intent, service to the local community, financial need, and plans to utilise their education upon returning to their home country, with the Office of International Student Admissions and Programs notifying applicants of the committee’s decision no later than April 1.
