The CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s PhD Scholarship Scheme is one of The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s most prestigious admission awards, designed to attract the brightest and most accomplished candidates to pursue full-time doctoral studies at CUHK. The scholarship offers a total award of HK$80,000 (approximately US$10,260), disbursed as HK$40,000 in the first year of attendance and HK$20,000 each in the second and third years subject to satisfactory academic progress. In addition to this award, recipients also receive an annual postgraduate studentship of HK$229,200 (approximately US$29,400) within the normative study period, as well as a Conference and Research-related Travel Allowance of HK$30,000 (approximately US$3,846) in total across the normative period bringing the comprehensive financial package available to doctoral students at CUHK to a very substantial level.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following:

  • Must be applying as a new full-time PhD student at The Chinese University of Hong Kong for the 2026/27 intake
  • Must apply through the CUHK Online Application System by the deadlines specified by individual programmes
  • Must demonstrate a clear and strong record of academic and/or research achievements; typical indicators include a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4.0 or equivalent from a recognised institution
  • Additional indicators of excellence include academic or research-related awards and scholarships, publications or contributions in reputable academic venues, and reference letters demonstrating substantial research experience and potential
  • Candidates holding a PhD admission offer from a top-tier university as measured by THE World, QS World, or ARWU rankings (subject rankings or university rankings) will be given strong consideration
  • Must demonstrate a high degree of intellectual curiosity, creativity, and potential for academic or professional leadership

Selection Criteria

The CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s PhD Scholarship is awarded to the brightest candidates among all eligible full-time PhD applicants through an automatic review process conducted as part of the general admissions assessment, with selection based on the overall strength of the academic and research profile including cumulative GPA, research publications and contributions in high-quality academic venues, the quality and substance of reference letters attesting to research experience and potential, academic awards and scholarships, and the competitiveness of PhD offers from other top-ranked institutions globally as well as demonstrated intellectual curiosity, creativity, and capacity for academic and professional leadership; the scholarship is reserved for the most outstanding candidates in each intake, and recipients must maintain satisfactory academic progress to receive the second and third year portions of the award.
