The A*STAR International Fellowship (AIF) is a prestigious scholarship administered by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) through the A*STAR Graduate Academy, designed to support early-career researchers in advancing their careers in research and innovation. The fellowship offers successful applicants up to two years of overseas postdoctoral training at leading universities, research institutions, or deep-tech startups that are portfolio companies of top-tier venture capital or builder firms, with the aim of nurturing globally ready talent who will contribute meaningfully to A\*STAR’s mission and Singapore’s broader research, development, and enterprise ecosystem upon the completion of their training. The AIF offers two distinct tracks tailored to different career aspirations, namely the Research Track for those pursuing academic and scientific excellence, and the Innovation Track for entrepreneurial-minded researchers keen to translate cutting-edge research into investable ventures.

Through the A*STAR Graduate Academy, scholars are connected to a vibrant community of innovators advancing science, developing cutting-edge technologies, and improving lives across diverse fields including biomedical research, data and AI, quantum sciences, semiconductors, and sustainable energy. Fellows also participate in Vista, A*STAR Graduate Academy’s signature developmental programme series, which provides opportunities to engage with A*STAR leadership and key opinion leaders in the research and development ecosystem, facilitating career advancement and networking with peers at various academic and career milestones.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following:
- Must be a Singaporean or Singapore Permanent Resident (SPR); foreigners who are non-SPRs with outstanding track records may be considered on an exceptional basis, and non-Singaporeans must obtain Singapore citizenship prior to the commencement of the fellowship
- Must have completed a PhD within the last 4 years; applicants in the final stages of their PhD may apply, but the award is confirmed only upon conferment of the PhD degree
- Must not have existing bonds to any institution
- For AIF (Research): must possess excellent publication records and have applied or be applying for a relevant postdoctoral position at a top overseas university or laboratory
- For AIF (Innovation): must demonstrate strong aptitude and aspiration to pursue roles in innovation and entrepreneurship, and preferably possess good publication records
- Mid-Term AIF applicants must be Singaporean, enrolled in a top overseas university or laboratory at the point of application, possess good publication records, and have their current postdoctoral supervisor as at least one of the two academic referees

Selection Criteria
Applications are reviewed by A*STAR Graduate Academy upon submission of all required documents, with shortlisted candidates invited to attend at least two rounds of interviews, where applicants are given 15 minutes to present their proposed research project followed by 15 minutes of questions and answers during the first round, with selection based on academic excellence, strength of publication records, the relevance and value of the proposed research topic to A*STAR’s research direction, the calibre of the proposed overseas university or institution, and for the Innovation Track, demonstrated aptitude and aspiration for innovation and entrepreneurship, with the AIF award conditional upon the applicant securing a confirmed place at an approved overseas university or institution.
