The University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship (UoADS) is a prestigious and competitive scholarship scheme offered four times per year at the University of Auckland, Waipapa Taumata Rau, providing a tax-free stipend of NZ$35,468 per annum (with annual CPI adjustments), tuition fee coverage, and compulsory single student health insurance for up to 42 months FTE to support outstanding doctoral candidates across all disciplines. Open to both domestic and international students, the scholarship is automatically considered as part of the doctoral programme application no separate application is required and from 2026, the offer of admission and the scholarship offer have been decoupled, meaning candidates can be considered for a scholarship while still completing their qualifying programme.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following:

  • Must hold an offer or conditional offer of a place in a doctoral programme at the University of Auckland before being eligible for scholarship consideration
  • Must not enrol in the doctoral programme before the scholarship outcome has been advised — enrolment before notification results in forfeiture of scholarship consideration
  • Open to both domestic and international students from all nationalities and all disciplines
  • Candidates still completing their qualifying programme and/or awaiting final grades may still be considered and may receive a conditional offer
  • The scholarship can be held part-time with prior approval to enrol part-time; no requirement to demonstrate compassionate or compelling reasons from 2026
  • For DHSc or EdD candidates with a compulsory part-time coursework component, the scholarship duration is 30 months FTE for the thesis component only
  • Guaranteed scholarships available for Māori and Pacific applicants with a qualifying programme GPA of 7.0 or above who receive a doctoral programme offer

Selection Criteria

The University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship is awarded through a competitive, merit-based selection process conducted four times per year by faculty, LSRI, or URC scholarship selection committees, who assess all eligible doctoral programme applicants based on academic excellence and research potential, strategic alignment with the university’s Signature Research Areas, the quality and originality of the proposed research, and the applicant’s overall suitability as a doctoral candidate; in line with the university’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion objectives, selection committees also consider gender, ethnicity, disability status, Rainbow community membership, and refugee background where applicants have chosen to disclose this information, with all such details remaining strictly confidential to the committee and used solely for the purpose of scholarship consideration.
