The M.S. Assistantship (Hellbenders) at Marshall University is offered through the Herpetology and Applied Conservation Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences. The program seeks two highly motivated graduate students to conduct research on eastern hellbenders in West Virginia, under the mentorship of Dr. Jayme Waldron and Dr. Shane Welch. Students will work collaboratively with state, federal, and NGO stakeholders, and are encouraged to develop and implement an M.S. thesis within the funded research project.

Marshall University is a public research university located in Huntington, West Virginia. The Department of Biological Sciences has an established graduate program with strong emphasis on applied conservation, field-based research, and collaborative science. Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this assistantship, applicants must meet the following:

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, wildlife science, or a related field with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Must be able to swim and hold a valid state motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • Must have at least one year of prior field research experience.
  • Demonstrated interest in hellbender ecology, population ecology, or demographic modeling is strongly preferred.
  • Must be committed to strict safety protocols and tolerant of challenging field conditions.
  • Must demonstrate maturity, a strong collaborative work ethic, and willingness to work independently when needed.
  • Must be fully committed to a three-year minimum assistantship starting August 2026.
