The Eric Bleumink Fellowship is one of the Netherlands’ most prestigious and comprehensive fully funded scholarship programmes for students from developing countries, established by the University of Groningen and named in honour of former Rector Magnificus Eric Bleumink in recognition of his lasting contribution to the university’s international mission. The fellowship covers full tuition fees, international travel costs, subsistence allowance, books, and health insurance for the entire duration of a 1 or 2-year Master’s degree starting in September at the University of Groningen. Uniquely, it is not possible to actively apply for the Eric Bleumink Fellowship. Instead, the University of Groningen Admission Office, in consultation with the Admission Boards of the faculties, identifies and nominates the most outstanding eligible candidates from among those who have already applied for and received a provisional or unconditional Master’s admission offer.

The University of Groningen, known in Dutch as Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (RUG), is one of the oldest and most prestigious research universities in the Netherlands, founded in 1614 and consistently ranked among the world’s top 100 universities in the QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. With over 35,000 students from more than 120 countries and a rich tradition of research excellence across all disciplines, Groningen offers an exceptional international academic environment in one of the Netherlands’ most vibrant and student-friendly cities. The university has produced numerous Nobel Prize laureates and Fields Medal winners among its alumni and faculty, and its commitment to international development through the Eric Bleumink Fellowship reflects its deeply held conviction that world-class education should be accessible to talented students from the world’s most disadvantaged countries.

Selection Criteria

The Eric Bleumink Fellowship selection process is conducted entirely by the University of Groningen Admission Office in consultation with faculty Admission Boards, with no active application possible from candidates. The committee identifies and nominates the most outstanding eligible candidates from among those who have already received a provisional or unconditional Master’s admission offer, assessing each candidate’s academic excellence, quality of academic record and grades, letters of recommendation, English language proficiency, and demonstrated financial need. Only a limited number of grants are awarded each year despite a considerable number of eligible candidates, making the fellowship highly competitive, and the strongest candidates are those who combine an exceptional academic profile with clear financial need and full availability for the entire duration of their chosen Master’s programme at Groningen.
