The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme is an established national initiative, funded by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, and managed by the Council. A new national research agency, Taighde Éireann/Research Ireland, has been established by the government. The agency will amalgamate the work of the Irish Research Council and Science Foundation Ireland. These awards will support suitably qualified research master’s and doctoral candidates pursuing, or intending to pursue, full-time research in any discipline

The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme is highly competitive, with an average success rate of 18% over the past five years. Successful awardees under the programme are recognised as demonstrating world-class potential as future research leaders. The Scholarship Programme is unique in the Irish research landscape and complements other channels for funded postgraduate education in the Irish ecosystem.

The Irish Research Council collaborates with enterprise, civil society, and with government to leverage the skills, knowledge, and talent of researchers to achieve maximum benefit for society. Established in 2012, the Irish Research Council is an associated agency of the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science and operates under the aegis of the Higher Education Authority.

Benefits of The Scholarship

Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme

These awards will support suitably qualified research master’s and doctoral candidates pursuing, or intending to pursue, full-time research in any discipline.

The value of the scholarship will be up to a maximum of €31,000 per annum in any approved year and will consist of the following:

  • Stipend of €22,000 per annum
  • Contribution to fees, including non-EU fees, up to a maximum of €5,750 per annum
  • Eligible direct research expenses of €3,250 per annum\

Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme

These awards will support suitably qualified postdoctoral candidates pursuing full-time research in any discipline.

  • A salary of €46,305 in the first year of the award
  • A salary of €47,879 in the second year of the award
  • Employer’s PRSI contribution
  • Eligible direct research expenses of €5,000 per annum.

Eligibility Criteria

  • There is no age limit for applicants to be eligible for either programme type.
  • All applicants must be affiliated with an eligible Irish higher education institution or research-performing organization
  • Applications will only be accepted in either the Irish or English language3 .
  • Applicants must not have had two previous unsuccessful applications to the relevant programme, including strategic partner themes. This applies regardless of whether the applicant has changed their host institution or research topic since a previous submission.
