The Canada Graduate Research Scholarship – Doctoral (CGRS D) is a prestigious, harmonized Tri-Agency award (administered by CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC) designed to recognize and support the next generation of outstanding researchers. The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) is a federal funding agency that supports research and training in the natural sciences and engineering across Canada. Established in 1978, it promotes scientific discovery, innovation, and the development of highly qualified personnel through grants, scholarships, and collaborative programs linking universities, industry, and government. As one of Canada’s three federal research granting agencies—alongside CIHR and SSHRC—NSERC plays a vital role in advancing both fundamental and applied research in fields such as physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and engineering.

The value of the scholarship is up to$40,000 stipend annually for a Doctoral programme. This fund can also be used by the students to cover:

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for this scholarship, applicants:

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or an international student enrolled at an eligible Canadian institution at the time of application
  • As of December 31 of the application year, the applicant must have completed no more than 36 months of full-time doctoral study

Selection Criteria

This Scholarship is awarded on the basis of:

  • Awarded based on academic excellence, research potential, and alignment with agency-specific mandates (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC).
  • Selection is part of a national competition; top-ranked applicants are funded. Specific priorities and evaluation factors vary slightly between the three agencies.
