The University of Canberra is currently offering highly competitive Research Scholarships for Higher Degree by Research (HDR) programs, including PhD studies. These scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence, the quality of the proposed research, and prior research achievements such as publications. Benefits typically include a tax-free annual stipend of AUD 36,225 (2025 rate) for up to 3.5 years, with additional support such as tuition fee waivers for international students. Scholarships are usually granted to fewer than 10% of applicants, making them prestigious and sought-after. Priority is given to top-performing candidates, including those with First-Class Honours or equivalent qualifications, Indigenous Australians, early-stage PhD candidates, and students enrolled in Industry PhD programs.

Note:

International candidates approved to commence offshore will not be paid their stipend scholarship until they are able to undertake their research onshore. The stipend will be back paid once they arrive at the University of Canberra, Bruce campus.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Scholarship, an applicant must:

  • Be enrolled, or seeking to enroll, as a full-time candidate in a Higher Degree by Research course at the University.
  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen; or an Australian permanent resident; or an international student eligible to study in Australia on an international student visa.
  • Not have previously held an Australian-Government-funded research scholarship for more than 6 months.
  • The scholarship will not be awarded to a candidate who is in receipt of an equivalent award, scholarship or salary providing a benefit greater than 75% of the stipend rate to undertake the HDR course. Income earned from sources unrelated to the course of study or income received for the student’s course of study but not for the purposes of supporting general living costs is not subject to the 75% rule.

Selection Criteria

  • Scholarship applications are assessed for completion and eligibility for admission to the PhD.
  • They are then forwarded onto to the appropriate faculties for academic staff to assess and rank applicants in an order of merit based on academic qualifications, strategic alignment, research proposal and research experience.
  • The University Research Scholarship Committee reviews the faculties’ ranking, and allocates the University Research Scholarships to the highest ranked applicants in Order of Merit.
