Carnegie Mellon University Africa (CMU-Africa) invites applications for its graduate programs in Information Technology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Engineering Artificial Intelligence for Fall 2026 intake. CMU-Africa’s mission is to deliver transformative educational programs to cultivate future technology leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators across Africa. The university engages in collaborative research and innovation to address African and global challenges.
Located in Kigali, Rwanda at the Kigali Innovation City, CMU-Africa is part of Carnegie Mellon University’s College of Engineering, which is ranked #7 by U.S. News & World Report (2025), with Computer Engineering ranked #4 and Electrical Engineering ranked #8. CMU-Africa delivers a world-class educational experience and is educating and empowering the next generation of African leaders and innovators.
Applicants must be passionate about solving problems on the continent using the education and skills acquired at CMU-Africa. Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for these programs, applicants must:
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
- Demonstrate strong academic performance with excellent grades
- Have technical competencies and qualifications relevant to IT or engineering
- Show passion for solving problems on the African continent
- Demonstrate leadership qualities through college extracurricular activities, academic and professional achievements, or personal accomplishments
- Be creative and question conventions with a critical thinking approach
- Meet English language proficiency requirements
- Be available to study full-time and in-person
- Be able to commence studies in Fall 2026
- Must be of African nationality to receive financial aid
- Must demonstrate financial need (African applicant)
- GRE is not required for Fall 2026 intake
- Only apply to one program

The CMU-Africa Admissions team uses a holistic review process that considers applicants’ academic excellence, technical competence, leadership potential, problem-solving passion for Africa, critical thinking skills, English proficiency, quality of essays and recommendations, and performance on the online technical competency test.
