The University of Helsinki Doctoral School (UHDS) invites applications for fixed-term university-funded doctoral researcher positions starting from January 1, 2026. Founded in 1640, the University of Helsinki is one of the top universities in Europe and is fully established among the top 100 research universities in the world. The university is a vivid, international scientific community of 40,000 students and researchers and is Finland’s most important provider of research infrastructures.
Doctoral researchers at the University conduct their doctoral research as part of an international scholarly community under the supervision of the best researchers in their respective fields. The University of Helsinki Doctoral School has 33 doctoral programmes, and approximately 500 doctoral degrees are completed at the University every year. These university-funded doctoral researcher positions enable doctoral researchers to work on their degrees full-time with the goal of completing the doctoral degree in four years.
The university provides annual funding for doctoral researcher positions in doctoral programmes, designated as full-time work. Successful applicants will become university-funded doctoral researchers at the University of Helsinki and will be expected to reside in Finland during their employment. Each position and employee will be assigned to a suitable faculty, faculty unit or independent institute. Research or part of it can be conducted outside the University of Helsinki, for example, in a governmental research institute, a company or other organisation in Finland, but the employment contract is concluded with the University of Helsinki, which will also provide the academic supervision.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this position, applicants must:
- Have completed a degree entitling them to pursue doctoral studies
- Demonstrate abilities and motivation to complete a doctoral degree in accordance with a research plan
- Must receive the right to complete a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki during their trial period at the latest
- Be willing to reside in Finland during employment at the University of Helsinki
- Have contacted a possible supervisor and prepared the application with the supervisor
- Be eligible to apply for the position according to programme-specific requirements
- Meet the requirements of one of the 33 doctoral programmes at the University

Selection Criteria
Applications are evaluated based on the quality and feasibility of the research plan and the applicant’s demonstrated abilities and motivation to successfully complete a doctoral degree, after which the doctoral programme steering group recommends candidates for researcher positions to the unit director, who makes the final employment decision.
