The Harvard University Center for the Environment (HUCE) established the Environmental Fellows Program to enable individuals who recently completed their doctoral studies to utilize and enhance Harvard’s exceptional resources while addressing multifaceted environmental challenges. Fellows collaborate for a two-year period with Harvard faculty members from any school or department, forming a scholarly community that strengthens interdisciplinary connections throughout the University.

Benefits of the Fellowship
This fellowship will provide the following comprehensive support to recipients:
- Annual salary of $90,000 for each year of the two-year fellowship period

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this fellowship, applicants must:
- Possess a doctorate or comparable terminal degree awarded between May 2022 and August 2026
- Identify and secure commitment from a Harvard faculty member willing to serve as host and mentor
- Propose an independent line of inquiry clearly extending beyond doctoral dissertation work and distinct from the host’s ongoing research
- Demonstrate relevance of proposed research to addressing environmental issues
- Show excellent potential for intellectual achievement and contribution to scholarship or practice
- For Harvard candidates (those receiving terminal degrees from Harvard or current post-docs): Proposed research and host arrangements must take them in substantially new directions significantly distinct from PhD research, forging new connections within the University. Harvard candidates should not propose continuing work with the same professors or groups with whom they are currently associated, nor should proposals extend current work
- Be open to all academic disciplines including sciences, economics, law, government, public policy, public health, medicine, design, and humanities

Selection Criteria
The HUCE faculty committee evaluates applications based on the applicant’s academic and professional success, potential contribution to environmental research, quality and independence of the project proposal, relevance and impact of the work, demonstration of intellectual potential, diversity to complement previous cohorts, host faculty’s support and mentorship capacity, and interview performance during a video discussion with the selection committee.
