Selection Criteria

The University of Alberta scholarship selection process is divided into two main categories — admission-based and application-based scholarships — each with distinct evaluation criteria.

For Admission-Based Scholarships: Selection is primarily determined by academic excellence, reflected in a high school admission average at the time of the admission offer. Additional considerations include faculty performance, with the Gold Standard Scholarship awarded to students ranking within the top 5% of their faculty, and regional excellence, recognizing exceptional performance from targeted regions. Assessment is automatic, meaning all applicants are evaluated for these scholarships upon applying for admission, with no separate application required.

For Application-Based Scholarships: Evaluation focuses on academic merit, demonstrated through a superior admission average and strong academic record; leadership qualities, shown through extracurricular involvement, community engagement, or academic initiatives; and, where applicable, financial need, evidenced by challenges or barriers to pursuing higher education. The committee also considers community involvement, quality of the personal statement highlighting alignment with scholarship objectives, and conducts a holistic assessment of each candidate’s academic achievements, leadership potential, and personal attributes.
