The University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program offers fully funded Master of Science in Health Professions Education (MSc in HPE) to prepare health educators and leaders to design, deliver, and evaluate high-quality, innovative, and equitable health professions programs across Africa. The Mastercard Foundation and UGHE partnership is set to provide 500 young African Scholars who are academically talented and committed to transformative change on the continent with a fully-funded opportunity.
Founded in 2015, the University of Global Health Equity is a non-profit private higher education institution located in Kigali, Rwanda. UGHE is on a mission to radically change the way health care is delivered around the world by building the next generation of global health professionals into leaders and changemakers who strive to deliver more equitable, quality health services for all. The MSc in HPE program is designed for experienced educators and academic leaders who aim to shape national HPE policy, lead institutions, or contribute to the global education evidence base.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:
- Be 35 or under the year at the time of application (exceptions apply to applicants with disabilities)
- Be residents and citizens or hold refugee status in an African country
- Have matriculated and successfully graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field
- NOT already hold a master’s degree
- Have professional experience in teaching, supervision, or educational leadership within health-related higher education institutions
- Demonstrate commitment to community service and health equity through active involvement beyond the classroom
- Be extremely talented individuals who might have faced barriers to quality higher education

Selection Criteria
UGHE’s Office of Admissions employs a holistic review process that assesses applicants not only on academic excellence in health-related disciplines but also on professional experience in teaching, supervision, or educational leadership within health professions education. The committee places strong emphasis on demonstrated commitment to health equity and community service, resilience in overcoming social or economic barriers, and leadership potential to influence health policy, institutional governance, or global education evidence. Additionally, candidates are evaluated on their alignment with UGHE’s mission of advancing equitable and quality healthcare, the strength of their supporting materials, essays, and recommendations, as well as their performance in the entrance exam and admissions interview—resulting in a comprehensive assessment of their readiness and potential to drive transformative change in African health professions education.
