The Nanyang President’s Graduate Scholarship (NPGS) is the premier scholarship granted by NTU’s President, recognizing PhD students who exemplify exceptional academic, research and leadership qualities. This competitive and prestigious scholarship scheme is designed to encourage outstanding graduates or final-year students to take their first step towards a leading research career by studying for a full-time PhD at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), one of Asia’s leading research universities.

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore is a public research-intensive university ranked among the global top 20, with approximately 33,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students across its Engineering, Business, Science, Medicine, Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Graduate colleges.

There is no restriction as to the nationality of candidates. Applicants from around the world can apply for this scholarship, though preference will be given to Singapore Citizens and Singapore Permanent Residents. Up to 30 NPGS awards are made available in each academic year.

Benefits of the Scholarship

This scholarship provides comprehensive support including:

Monthly stipend of SGD $6,700 for full-time PhD students in any of the STEM disciplines (Singapore Citizens) and SGD $5,000 for international students
Monthly stipend of SGD $4,400 for full-time PhD students in any of the social science and humanities disciplines (Singapore Citizens) and SGD $4,000 for international students
Full tuition fee coverage for the entire duration of the PhD program (up to 4 years)
Conference allowance up to SGD $4,000 per financial year for research presentations and networking
Annual grant of up to SGD $500 for book allowance
One time IT allowance of up to SGD $1,500
One time thesis allowance of up to SGD $600
Priority for subsidized campus accommodation

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:

Have a Bachelor’s degree with Honours (Highest Distinction) or equivalent
If not yet completed undergraduate degree, must furnish documentation from university showing on track to achieve Honours (Highest Distinction) degree or equivalent
Be outstanding graduates or final-year students committed to pursuing a leading research career
Demonstrate exceptional academic performance
Show strong research potential and leadership qualities
Be applying for or enrolled in a full-time PhD program at NTU
Meet NTU’s standard admission requirements for PhD programs
No nationality restrictions – applicants from all countries are welcome
Preference given to Singapore Citizens and Singapore Permanent Residents
Foreign applicants must perform teaching/laboratory supervision duties to fulfil Graduate Assistantship Programme (GAP) requirements.

The NPGS selection process follows a rigorous, holistic evaluation that considers candidates’ exceptional academic performance—typically at the level of Honours (Highest Distinction) or equivalent—their demonstrated research potential and ability to undertake high-quality doctoral work, and evidence of leadership qualities indicating promise as future research leaders. Applicants are further assessed on the quality and feasibility of their proposed PhD research, the strength of their academic references, and their interview performance, culminating in an overall appraisal of their suitability for NTU’s research environment and alignment with the scholarship’s objectives.
