The Arrell Scholarship is a highly prestigious and generously funded graduate award offered through the University of Guelph’s Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partnership with the Arrell Food Institute. Valued at CAD $50,000 per year for up to two years (six semesters), the scholarship supports exceptional Master’s students whose research aligns with the Arrell Food Institute’s mission to produce more healthy and nutritious food, grow the economy, and reduce the negative environmental and social impacts of the global agri-food system. Beyond financial support, successful recipients are expected to provide leadership within multidisciplinary teams of graduate students working alongside community, government, and industry partners on pressing global food challenges.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following:
- Must be entering a Master’s program at the University of Guelph in the Fall semester following the April 15, 2026 application deadline
- Must have a minimum first-class (A-) admissions average
- Must have a proposed plan of research that is compatible with the Arrell Food Institute’s vision — eligible research areas include food security, plant science, consumer behaviour, diet and nutrition, agri-food sustainability, and related fields
- Must submit a complete application for admission to a graduate program at the University of Guelph, including all required supporting documents, by the April 15, 2026 deadline
- Must submit a complete Arrell Scholarship Application including a statement of research interests and personal motivations (maximum 2 pages with up to 1 additional page for citations), a current CV, unofficial transcripts, and a reference letter from the proposed supervisor sent directly to grschol@uoguelph.ca
- In cases of extenuating circumstances, deferral of the award start date may be possible, subject to approval from the graduate program and the Arrell Food Institute
- This scholarship cannot be held concurrently with Ontario Graduate Scholarships/QEII-Graduate Scholarships in Science & Technology, the Brock Doctoral Scholarship, Dairy Farmers of Ontario Doctoral Research Assistantship, or Tri-Agency Scholarships including the Vanier

Selection Criteria
The scholarships will be awarded following a selection process through which all application files will be screened and then reviewed by a scholarship selection committee based upon:
Outstanding academic achievement;
Relevance of proposed research and personal motivation to the vision of the Arrell Food Institute;
Evidence of involvement and experience with community e.g. volunteer, knowledge sharing, or otherwise
