The Alan and Helen Ross Forestry Education Scholarship is offered by the Fenner School of Environment & Society at the Australian National University (ANU) to support a Papua New Guinea (PNG) citizen with interests and experience in PNG forests and forestry to study a graduate coursework program in forests. Funding for the award has been provided by the Alan and Helen Ross Forestry Education Scholarship Trust, which honours the life and work of Alan and Helen Ross, longtime residents of PNG who were deeply committed to its future. Alan Ross was a highly respected figure in forestry in PNG, mentoring many of his PNG colleagues. Only one scholarship is offered per competition, and continuation of the award is based on a full-time study load. Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following:

  • Must be an international student visa holder with Papua New Guinea citizenship
  • Must hold an undergraduate qualification in forestry or a related discipline; or, in exceptional cases, does not hold such a qualification but possesses equivalent extensive professional experience in forestry
  • Must receive an offer of admission to one of the following programs: Master of Forests; Graduate Diploma in Science; or Graduate Certificate in Forests

Selection Criteria

Recipients are selected based on academic merit. Applications are assessed on the basis of a completed application form, a written statement of no more than two pages outlining the proposed degree, the goals of study, and anticipated benefits to both the candidate and Papua New Guinea, a curriculum vitae of no more than three pages with examples of academic or professional work, academic transcripts for prior tertiary studies, and nominations of three referees — at least one of whom can speak to the candidate’s academic capability and at least one of whom can speak to their professional work.
