The scholarship department of the Heinrich Böll Foundation grants scholarships to graduates, and doctoral students from outside Germany. An application for a scholarship for an undergraduate degree is not possible. The Foundation grants scholarships to approximately 1500 undergraduates, graduates, and doctoral students of all subjects and nationalities per year, who are pursuing their degree at universities, universities of applied sciences or universities of the arts.
The Heinrich Böll Foundation, founded in 1986 and unified under its current name in 1997, is named after Nobel Prize-winning author Heinrich Böll. It promotes democratic values, environmental sustainability, social justice, and human rights.
The foundation operates globally, supporting educational initiatives, public dialogue, and research aligned with green political principles. Benefits of The Heinrich Boll Stiftung Scholarships
- €812 – €1450 monthly stipend
- €100 – €300 monthly research/study costs allowance

- Additional funding is available for scholarship-holders only for limited periods spent abroad.

Eligibility Criteria
- Proof of proficiency in German Level B2 or DSH 2 with certificate
- Proof of admission to graduate or doctoral studies by a state or state recognized university, as a rule in Germany, must be included in with the application.

- Have excellent academic records
- Be socially and politically engaged
- Have an active interest in the basic values of the foundation: ecology and sustainability, democracy and human rights, self-determination and justice
NOTE
- Only online applications are accepted. The application portal will be opened about 6 weeks before the application deadline.
- Refugees can apply regardless of their asylum status. Refugees who wish to start or continue a bachelor’s or master’s degree (or diploma or state examination course) in Germany can apply anytime, regardless of their semester of study.
