The Ernst Mach Grant 2026 is a prestigious scholarship program funded by the Republic of Austria through the Federal Ministry of Women, Science and Research (BMFWF) and administered by OeAD-GmbH, Austria’s Agency for Education and Internationalisation. This scholarship promotes research cooperation, supports young academics in the early stages of their scientific careers, and establishes an effective network of researchers with relations to Austria.
The program specifically targets students from countries across Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania who wish to complete semester-long or one-year study projects at Austrian Universities of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschulen), institutions renowned for their practical orientation and strong industry connections. Austrian Fachhochschulen offer cutting-edge programs in economics and business, tourism, economics and technology, technology and biotechnology, media and design, as well as health and social matters.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:
- Be a citizen of one of the eligible countries (countries from Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania – see complete list on official website)
- Be enrolled as a master’s student at a university in one of the eligible countries, OR
- Be enrolled as a bachelor’s student at a university in one of the eligible countries and have successfully completed at least 4 semesters by the time of taking up the grant
- Must be accepted as an exchange student or free mover from an Austrian University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule)
- Must provide confirmation of acceptance from the Fachhochschule with application
- Maximum age 35 years (born on or after October 1, 1990)
- Very good knowledge of English and/or German
- Must NOT have lived/studied/pursued research/pursued academic work in Austria in the last six months before taking up the grant
- Must pass exams corresponding to at least 16 ECTS credits per semester
- If scholarship awarded for longer than one semester, must gain at least 16 ECTS credits in first semester by March 15, 2027, or scholarship automatically ends

Selection Criteria
Selection is highly competitive based on formal requirements compliance (complete documentation including two university lecturer recommendation letters not older than six months, confirmation of home university credit recognition, and Fachhochschule acceptance), general application plausibility (coherent study plan completable within scholarship period), expert assessment and evaluation (academic merit, research potential, and project quality reviewed by specialists), and final decision by BMFWF (Federal Ministry). Incomplete applications or those not meeting criteria are rejected.
