The 2026 Pan African University (PAU) Scholarships offer an exceptional fully funded opportunity for outstanding young Africans to pursue Master’s or PhD degrees at any of PAU’s four institutes across the continent. The program covers tuition, accommodation, living stipends, travel, books, and research expenses, while providing high-quality training from leading faculty, joint PAU–host university degrees, and a rich multicultural academic environment. Scholars also benefit from strong career guidance and access to rapidly growing professional fields across Africa.

Established by the African Union’s Heads of State and Government, the Pan African University is a flagship initiative designed to strengthen higher education and research across the continent. Since 2014, it has awarded 2,549 certificates to students from 50 AU Member States. Its four institutes—PAUSTI in Kenya, PAULESI in Nigeria, PAUGHSS in Cameroon, and PAUWES in Algeria—play a vital role in promoting academic excellence and enhancing the global competitiveness of African universities, positioning higher education at the center of Africa’s sustainable development.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of any African country or member of the African Diaspora
  • Be not older than 25 years for male applicants and 28 years for female applicants (for Master’s programs)
  • Hold an undergraduate degree from a recognized university with at least a second-class upper division or its equivalent in a relevant field
  • Demonstrate commitment to working in Africa after graduation
  • Certified copies of relevant certificates and transcripts,
  • Passport or National I.D. card (biometric/ personal details page).
  • Clear coloured passport size photograph (2cmx2cm).
  • Maximum 28 years old for male and 30 years old for female applicants. (for PhD program)
  • For PhD applicants: Hold a Master’s degree from a recognized university with excellent grades in a relevant field
  • For PhD applicants: Submit a 3-4 page Research Concept Note including tentative title, research questions, objectives, and significance of the research
  • For PhD applicants: Provide names of 3 Reference University Teachers with email addresses and WhatsApp numbers (mandatory)
  • Have strong academic records demonstrating intellectual capability and research potential
  • Show potential, motivation, and desire to play transformative leadership roles as academics, professionals, industrialists, innovators, and entrepreneurs
  • Meet program-specific requirements for chosen field of study and institute

Selection Criteria

The African Union Commission employs a competitive selection process evaluating candidates based on academic excellence demonstrated through strong university transcripts showing at least second-class upper division or equivalent grades for Master’s applicants and excellent Master’s degree results for PhD applicants, quality and relevance of research interests particularly for PhD candidates whose research concept notes must demonstrate clear research questions, well-defined objectives, significant contributions to their fields, and alignment with Africa’s development priorities
