The 2026/27 Hyundai Motor Group Scholarships at SOAS University of London are designed to nurture talent from Africa and cultivate the next generation of experts committed to sustainable development across the African continent. Offered in partnership between Hyundai Motor Group and SOAS, five scholarships are available for the 2026/27 academic year — four for Masters Students and one for a research degree student. These scholarships aim to empower outstanding African students to find solutions to global challenges, while building lasting networks through seminars, alumni engagement, and a Junior Internship Programme at SOAS.

Benefits of the Scholarship

This scholarship will provide the following to its recipients:

  • Masters award valued at £27,730, from which full tuition fees will be paid — any remaining balance after tuition will be provided as a living stipend
  • PhD award covering full tuition fees for three years of full-time study plus a writing-up year, and an annual stipend of £22,780 paid in termly instalments
  • Invitation to participate in networking events and seminars hosted by Hyundai Motor Group during and after studies
  • Access to a long-term alumni collaboration model connecting scholars with Hyundai Motor Group beyond graduation
  • Opportunity to apply for the Junior Internship Programme at SOAS (for Masters students)

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following:

  • Must be an African national who is ordinarily resident in Africa
  • Must be an international fee-paying applicant only
  • Must be applying for a new admission for a programme starting in the 2026/27 academic year — existing students are not eligible
  • For the Masters scholarship: must possess or expect to be awarded an international equivalent to a first-class honours degree from a UK university; applicants with a 2:1 may apply but will not be given preference
  • For the MPhil/PhD scholarship: must possess or expect to be awarded an international equivalent to a Masters degree with distinction from a UK university; applicants with a merit may apply but will not be given preference
  • Must have applied to SOAS, though a formal offer is not required by the scholarship deadline — however, an unconditional offer must be in place by the time the selection panel convenes
  • Must meet the English language condition of their offer of admission to SOAS, if applicable
  • Part-time courses and two-year Masters programmes are not eligible
  • This scholarship does not cover funding for pre-sessional courses

Selection Criteria

Qualified students for the 2026/27 Hyundai Motor Group Scholarship will be selected based on academic merit alongside an assessment of how their chosen subject of study aligns with the vision of sustainable African transformation and growth. The selection panel will review all aspects of the admissions application including degree results, personal statement, references, and transcripts, with preference given to applicants from the College of Development Studies, Economics and Finance and the College of Law, Anthropology and Politics.
