Selection Criteria

Candidates for the 2026 President’s PhD Scholarships at Imperial College London are evaluated through a rigorous two-stage process. Departments first review all eligible applicants and submit a shortlist to the College Selection Panel — comprising the Vice-Provost (Research), the Director of the Graduate School, and the Faculty Vice-Deans for Research — who make the final decisions. Assessment focuses primarily on two dimensions: academic excellence, evidenced through past results, transcripts, class position, awards, and distinctions; and research potential, assessed through the candidate’s prior research experience, intellectual curiosity, the strength and originality of their research proposal, and the departmental statement reflecting on their interview performance. A strategic allocation is also reserved for Alternate Pathways candidates who demonstrate exceptional promise despite non-traditional academic or career histories.
