The 2026 Macquarie University Graduate Research Scholarships — comprising the International Research Training Program (iRTP) and the International Macquarie Research Excellence Scholarship (iMQRES) — are among Australia’s most prestigious fully funded research awards for exceptional graduate researchers. Open to both domestic and international students, these scholarships support study in the Graduate Diploma of Research, Master of Research (MRes), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes. Applicants applying for the iRTP are automatically considered for the iMQRES in the same round, which prioritises candidates whose research aligns with Macquarie University’s Research Strategy 2035. Benefits of the Scholarship
This scholarship will provide the following to its recipients:
- Full tuition fee offset
- A living allowance (stipend) of approximately AUD $39,700 per year (2026 rate)
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
- Visa application cost coverage for international students
- Graduate Diploma of Research scholarship valued at AUD $5,000 per session, paid as a lump sum
- An OPAL card travel concession for eligible PhD iRTP recipients
- Award holders may also receive top-up funding from industry or other sources up to a maximum of 75% of the base stipend rate

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following:
- Must meet the minimum entry criteria for the relevant research degree (MRes, PhD, or GradDipRes) at Macquarie University
- New for 2026: At the time of application, international applicants must have already completed their qualifying degree for both MRes and PhD applications — applicants in their final semester are generally not eligible, except for specific internal or MQBS cases
- Must confirm supervision from an eligible Macquarie University researcher — compulsory for some faculties and strongly recommended for others
- Must meet Macquarie University’s English language requirements for research degrees at the time of application
- Must not be enrolled in a progressing Macquarie cohort prior to 1 July 2025 (with specific exceptions)
- Must not be receiving another equivalent major award that fully covers both tuition and stipend for the same programme
- Award holders may receive minor supplementary awards, allowances, or part-time earnings within the guidelines set by the scholarship conditionsApplicants who are already enrolled or have received a valid Macquarie University letter of offer for a graduate research programme within the last six months must submit a Scholarship Only application form

Selection Criteria
