The Marine Scholarship of China is a specialized scholarship program jointly initiated by China’s State Oceanic Administration (SOA) and the Ministry of Education (MOE) to provide comprehensive financial support to outstanding students from developing coastal nations pursuing advanced studies in oceanography and marine-related fields. Administered by the China Scholarship Council (CSC), this prestigious scholarship targets students from coastal countries around the South China Sea, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean regions, and African developing nations, aiming to cultivate advanced professionals in marine sciences, enhance international marine cooperation and exchange, and promote harmonious ocean development globally.

Tongji ranks among China’s top 10 universities and is particularly renowned for excellence in engineering, architecture, urban planning, environmental sciences, and marine sciences. Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following:
- Must be a citizen of non-Chinese nationality in good health
- Must be from a coastal/island country of the South China Sea, the Indian Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and its surrounding island countries, OR an African developing country
- For Master’s Degree: Must have a bachelor’s degree in related fields; usually under 40 years of age
- Must apply to programs in marine science, geophysics, or other marine affairs related majors
- For Chinese-taught programs: Must submit valid HSK Level 5 certificate with total score ≥180, OR if highest degree was taught in Chinese, provide certificate confirming Chinese as language of instruction (HSK not needed in this case)
- For other language-taught programs: Must provide relevant language proficiency certificates according to university requirements (e.g., IELTS or TOEFL)
- Must be in good physical and mental health
- Must demonstrate strong academic background and research potential in marine sciences or related fields
- Must be committed to contributing to marine science development in home country after graduation

Selection Criteria
The Marine Scholarship selection process is rigorous and conducted through expert panel review evaluating multiple dimensions of candidate qualifications. Applications are assessed based on educational background including quality of previous degrees and academic institutions attended, academic capability demonstrated through transcripts, coursework, and standardized test scores, research achievements including publications, conference presentations, or previous research projects, opinion and recommendation from proposed supervisor at Tongji University, and relevant working experience in marine sciences, oceanography, environmental protection, or related fields.
