The Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS) at Hainan University represents one of China’s most comprehensive funding opportunities for international students, administered by the China Scholarship Council (CSC) on behalf of the Ministry of Education. This prestigious program offers two distinct application routes: Type A (Bilateral Program) managed through Chinese embassies and designated agencies in applicants’ home countries, and Type B (Chinese University Program) where students apply directly to Hainan University through the CSC online portal. With over 289 Chinese universities participating in the CSC program nationwide, Hainan University stands out as a premier destination combining strong academics with unique tropical island living and strategic location in China’s ambitious Hainan Free Trade Port.
Established through the 2007 merger of the former Hainan University and South China University of Tropical Agriculture, Hainan University is a comprehensive key provincial university jointly administered by the Hainan Provincial Government, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Finance. Designated as a “211 Project” institution and participant in China’s “Double First-Class” university initiative, Hainan University ranks 93rd nationally in the 2025 Shanghai Rankings and hosts multiple disciplines ranking in the global top 1% by ESI (Essential Science Indicators), including agronomy, plant and animal sciences, chemistry, materials science, engineering, and environmental/ecological sciences.
