Cornell University’s grant and endowed scholarship programme is one of the most generous and far-reaching need-based financial aid programmes available to international undergraduate students at any university in the United States, reflecting Cornell’s deep and longstanding commitment to access and affordability. Cornell meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for all admitted international undergraduates, with annual aid offers combining Cornell grants, an annual work-study award, and reasonable student loans depending on total family income, ensuring that no admitted student is prevented from attending Cornell solely because of financial circumstances.

Cornell University is one of the world’s most prestigious and comprehensive research universities and a founding member of the Ivy League, consistently ranked among the top 15 universities globally in the QS World University Rankings and home to over 25,000 students from more than 130 countries across its 14 schools and colleges. Founded in 1865 and located in Ithaca, New York, in the heart of the Finger Lakes region, Cornell is unique among Ivy League institutions in combining statutory and endowed units within a single university, offering exceptional breadth across engineering, liberal arts, agriculture, veterinary medicine, law, business, architecture, and the hotel administration school, widely regarded as the world’s leading hospitality management programme.

Selection Criteria

Cornell’s grant and scholarship programme is need-based rather than merit-based, meaning that financial need as assessed through the CSS Profile and supporting documentation is the primary and determining criterion for the award of Cornell grants and endowed scholarships. The financial aid office carefully reviews each student’s CSS Profile application and all requested documentation to confirm the expected family contribution, demonstrated need, and eligibility for financial aid, with the size of the grant award determined by the gap between the family’s expected contribution and the total cost of attendance. For named endowed scholarships, eligible students are automatically matched to available endowments based on donor-established criteria or preferences without any additional application, with endowed scholarships potentially replacing a Cornell grant, work-study, or student loan component of the aid package depending on the specific fund’s requirements.
