The University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF) is one of Canada’s most generous university-funded graduate fellowships, offered annually by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies to full-time Master’s and PhD students who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement and outstanding promise as researchers. Master’s awards are valued at $20,000 per year for up to 24 months, while doctoral awards are valued at $25,000 per year for up to 48 months, with the total possible UMGF support across both levels capped at 4 years per student. The fellowship is open to students of all nationalities without restriction, making it one of the most internationally inclusive graduate fellowship programmes at any Canadian university, and it is administered entirely through the department or unit in which the student is enrolled, with departments nominating their strongest candidates to FGPS for final review and award. Students who hold or are offered another singular award of equal or greater annual value than the UMGF must notify FGPS and terminate their UMGF, ensuring that the fellowship reaches those who can benefit from it most.
The University of Manitoba is one of Canada’s leading comprehensive research universities, founded in 1877 as the first university in western Canada, and home to over 30,000 students across more than 100 graduate programmes spanning sciences, engineering, health sciences, business, humanities, law, and social sciences. Located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, a vibrant and culturally diverse city at the heart of Canada’s prairie region, the university offers graduate students access to world-class research facilities, a strong and supportive academic community, and significant funding through a combination of institutional, provincial, and federal sources. With consistent recognition for research excellence across fields ranging from agriculture and environmental science to immunology, Indigenous studies, and engineering, the University of Manitoba provides an exceptional and well-supported environment for graduate research at all levels.

Selection Criteria
The UMGF selection process is conducted at two levels, with each department or unit first identifying and selecting their strongest candidates based on academic excellence, demonstrated research promise, and potential as graduate scholars, before submitting their recommendations to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for final review. Academic performance is fundamental, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 required and departments typically nominating their highest-achieving students who demonstrate superior intellectual ability and academic accomplishment relative to their cohort. The final award decisions rest with FGPS, which reviews all departmental nominations against the published eligibility criteria and notifies successful recipients with an official letter via email, with the value and duration of each individual award determined by the nominating department within the parameters set by FGPS.
