The Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program at Stanford University is one of the world’s most prestigious and fully funded graduate scholarship programmes, selecting approximately 100 high-achieving students annually from across the globe to pursue any graduate degree including JD, MA, MBA, MD, MFA, MS, DMA, or PhD at any of Stanford’s seven schools, spanning business, earth and environmental sciences, education, engineering, humanities and sciences, law, and medicine. The scholarship provides up to three years of comprehensive financial support, covering full tuition and associated fees, a living stipend for accommodation, books, and personal expenses, an annual economy-class return airfare to and from Stanford, a one-time relocation stipend for newly enrolling scholars, and supplemental funds for academic enrichment activities such as conference travel in the second and third years.

Stanford University is one of the world’s foremost research and teaching institutions, consistently ranked among the top universities globally across virtually every discipline, and home to an extraordinary concentration of Nobel laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, and pioneering innovators. Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, Stanford fosters a uniquely entrepreneurial and interdisciplinary academic environment where scholars from every corner of the world are challenged to collaborate across fields and drive transformative change at the highest levels of academia, industry, government, and civil society. Through the fully endowed Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program — named after philanthropist Phil Knight and former Stanford President John Hennessy — the university reaffirms its commitment to cultivating the next generation of global leaders dedicated to addressing the world’s most complex and pressing challenges.

Selection Criteria

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars selection process is highly competitive and holistic, with no fixed formula, minimum score, or specific achievement that automatically qualifies a candidate; instead, the programme seeks individuals who demonstrate three core qualities independence of thought (being visionary, curious, open-minded, and analytically bold), purposeful leadership (being ethical, decisive, resilient, and motivated to inspire positive change at scale), and a civic mindset (being humble, empathetic, and deeply committed to serving others and contributing to the greater good). Applications are reviewed by both the Knight-Hennessy Scholars programme and the relevant Stanford graduate department, with top candidates invited to a weekend immersion event before final selections are made, and all candidates must apply simultaneously to their chosen Stanford graduate programme, with final results typically announced in mid-March of the application year.
