The University of York GREAT Scholarship is a prestigious award offered in partnership with the British Council and the GREAT Britain Campaign, providing a minimum of £10,000 in financial support as a direct tuition fee deduction to four outstanding postgraduate students one from each of the eligible countries of China, Indonesia, Kenya, and Malaysia pursuing a one-year postgraduate taught programme at the University of York in the 2026/27 academic year. Part of the wider GREAT Scholarships 2026 programme launched by the British Council in collaboration with over 60 UK universities, the award is open to applicants from the majority of postgraduate taught courses at York and is assessed through a competitive written application process, with strong preference given to candidates demonstrating the strongest academic record such as a UK first-class degree or equivalent.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following:

  • Must be a permanent resident and passport holder of China, Indonesia, Malaysia, or Kenya
  • Must hold a Conditional or Unconditional Offer to study a one-year postgraduate taught course at the University of York by May 11, 2026 (acceptance of the offer is not required at the time of application)
  • Must be paying fees at the overseas fee rate; any fee assessments must be completed by May 11, 2026
  • Must have met any English language condition of the offer by May 11, 2026
  • Must not already hold a 100% tuition fee scholarship or be fully sponsored
  • Must not be a current University of York student who began studies in a previous academic year
  • Not eligible for students on the following pathways: Hull York Medical School, International Pathway College, distance or online learning, part-time courses, Kaplan International College London, MA Public Policy (Mundus MAPP), CASPPER, Master’s courses lasting longer than one year, or partnership and exchange students

Selection Criteria

The University of York GREAT Scholarship is awarded through a competitive selection process in which a panel of senior University staff reviews all eligible written applications and selects one successful candidate per country  with only four total awards available across China, Indonesia, Kenya, and Malaysia based primarily on prior academic merit, with strong preference given to applicants who hold the strongest academic records such as a UK first-class degree or equivalent, as well as their written responses to questions about their course of study and goals for the future; successful candidates must formally accept the scholarship offer, make the University of York their firm choice, and complete these steps by the deadline stated in their offer email, failing which the scholarship will be offered to a reserve candidate.
