The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) is a prestigious scholarship open to citizens of certain World Bank member developing countries with relevant professional experience and a history of supporting their countries’ development efforts, who are applying to a master’s degree programme in a development-related topic. Subject to available funding, the JJ/WBGSP offers scholarships for 44 participating master’s programmes across 24 universities in the United States, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and Japan, covering key areas of development including economic policy management, tax policy, and infrastructure management.
The World Bank Group is one of the world’s largest sources of funding and knowledge for developing countries, with a mission to end extreme poverty and promote shared prosperity on a liveable planet. Through the JJ/WBGSP, the World Bank and the Government of Japan invest in the next generation of development professionals from the world’s most underserved communities, enabling exceptional individuals to gain world-class graduate education and return to their home countries to apply their new skills and contribute to social and economic development. After earning their degree, developing country scholars commit to return to their home country to use their new skills and contribute to their countries’ social and economic development.

Selection Criteria
Two qualified assessors independently review each eligible application and score it on a scale of 1 to 10, taking into account four main factors: quality of professional experience (30% weight), quality of professional recommendations (30% weight), quality of commitment to the home country (30% weight), and quality of education background (10% weight), with the JJ/WBGSP Secretariat using the average score of the two assessors alongside additional considerations including geographical distribution of awards, gender distribution, unusual circumstances or hardships, and preference for applicants with limited access to financial resources for graduate studies abroad, before presenting the list of finalists to the JJ/WBGSP Steering Committee for approval.
