The KAAD Scholarship Programmes are offered by the Catholic Academic Exchange Service (Katholischer Akademischer Austauschdienst), a Catholic organisation based in Bonn, Germany, that supports postgraduates, academics, and researchers from developing countries and Eastern Europe in pursuing advanced studies and research at German universities. KAAD operates four distinct scholarship programmes: Scholarship Programme 1, which invites postgraduates from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America to pursue Master’s, PhD, or postgraduate studies in Germany; In-country and Third-country Scholarships, which support Master’s studies in the applicant’s home country or a nearby regional country; Scholarship Programme 2, which supports students from Global South countries who are already studying for their PhD or Master’s in Germany.
The Catholic Academic Exchange Service (KAAD) was founded in 1958 and is headquartered in Bonn, Germany. It is one of Germany’s leading Catholic scholarship organisations, funded by the German Bishops’ Conference, Misereor, the German Federal Foreign Office, Renovabis, and Adveniat. KAAD supports over 300 scholars annually from more than 60 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe, with a particular emphasis on interreligious dialogue, social commitment, and the reintegration of scholars into their home regions after their studies. Beyond financial support, KAAD also offers non-material support including educational events, an Annual Academy, and spiritual guidance.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for these scholarships, applicants must meet the following:
- Scholarship Programme 1 (Germany): Must come from and currently reside in a developing or emerging country in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, or Latin America; must hold a university degree and have professional experience in the home country
- Must wish to pursue a Master’s degree, PhD, postgraduate studies, post-doc, or research stay (2–6 months) at a German university
- Must be of Catholic denomination or generally Christian (applicants of other religions may be funded if proposed by Catholic partners and able to document willingness for interreligious dialogue); must have German language skills of at least B1 (or A2 for English-language programmes)
- Scholarship Programme 2: Must be from a country of the Global South and already enrolled in a Master’s or PhD programme in Germany; must be proposed by a Catholic University Chaplaincy in Germany
- Eastern Europe Programme: Must be from Central, Southeastern, or Eastern Europe and seeking to pursue PhD studies, a Master’s programme, or a shorter research stay in Germany; applications are processed through KAAD’s partner committees in the respective country
- All applicants must demonstrate above-average academic performance, social and religious commitment or openness to interreligious dialogue, and orientation of studies or research towards reintegration into their home region

Selection Criteria
All applications are processed through KAAD’s partner committees in the applicant’s home region, and direct applications are considered only in exceptional cases. Candidates are assessed based on academic performance, professional experience, social and religious commitment, openness to interreligious dialogue, and a documented intention to return to and reintegrate into their home region after completing their studies. For Scholarship Programme 2, Catholic University Chaplaincies in Germany have the right to propose suitable applicants, and selection is based on academic merit and personal commitment.
