The Reginald F. Lewis Fellowship for Law Teaching is a prestigious one-year postdoctoral fellowship offered by Harvard Law School to support a recent law graduate who has demonstrated a strong interest in legal scholarship and who is preparing for a career in law teaching. The fellowship is made available through a gift from Reginald F. Lewis a graduate of Harvard Law School (Class of 1968), founding CEO of TLC Beatrice Foods International, and author of Why Should White Guys Have All the Fun? and his wife, Loida Nicolas-Lewis. Shortly before his death in 1993, Mr. Lewis gave the largest grant at the time in the Law School’s history, and Harvard Law School’s International Law Center was renamed in his honour. The Lewis Fellow is required to prepare at least one major article for publication during the fellowship year and to follow a schedule of research and work agreed upon with the Lewis Committee.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:
- Must hold a J.D., LL.M., or S.J.D. degree at the time of application
- Must have demonstrated a strong interest in legal scholarship and a career in law teaching
- Must be able to be in residence at Harvard Law School during the academic year (July 1, 2027 – June 30, 2028)
- Must submit a complete application including all required materials by October 1, 2026 — both the application and both letters of reference must be submitted by the deadline; incomplete applications will not be considered

Selection Criteria
Applications are reviewed by the Lewis Committee at Harvard Law School. Candidates are assessed on the strength of their academic and research background, the quality and originality of the proposed research and writing project (described in a detailed project description of up to four pages), the clarity and depth of their statement of interest in law teaching and legal scholarship including the fields in which they expect to teach and pursue scholarship, academic transcripts, and two letters of reference addressing the applicant’s potential for success as a legal scholar and law teacher. The Lewis Fellow is required to prepare at least one major article for publication during the fellowship year and must follow a research and work schedule agreed upon with the Lewis Committee.
