The A.S. Hornby Educational Trust Scholarship is offered in partnership with the University of Exeter’s School of Education, dedicated to strengthening English language teaching worldwide with a particular focus on capacity building in low- and middle-income countries. For 2027/28 entry, up to ten fully funded scholarships are available for experienced English language teachers and related professionals studying the MEd TESOL programme, awarded to academically talented and experienced applicants who have demonstrated the potential to make a significant impact on English language teaching and learning in their home countries.
The University of Exeter is a member of the Russell Group, the UK’s 24 leading research-intensive universities, and holds a Gold rating in the UK’s Teaching Excellence Framework. Its School of Education has hosted Hornby Scholars from countries including Nigeria, Cameroon, Palestine, Myanmar, Colombia, Ukraine, Vietnam, Brazil, Kazakhstan, and Egypt, who go on to apply their studies to teacher training, curriculum development, and English language education initiatives in their home countries.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:
- Must be a resident of, and work in, a country defined as Least Developed, Low Income, Lower Middle Income, or Upper Middle Income according to the OECD DAC list
- Must have a minimum of three years’ full-time TESOL teaching or related professional experience after their first degree
- Must already hold an undergraduate degree or equivalent (with grades equivalent to UK upper 2nd class honours or higher), or a relevant postgraduate degree
- Must not already hold a doctoral degree in TESOL, applied linguistics, English, or a related area
- Must not already hold a master’s degree in TESOL, applied linguistics, English, or a related area from a UK university
- This scholarship is only available for the MEd TESOL programme and is not available for the PGCert or PGDip TESOL pathways

Selection Criteria
Applications are jointly considered by the University of Exeter and the Hornby Educational Trust, based on academic excellence, professional experience in English language teaching, and demonstrated potential for impact. There is no need to apply for the MEd TESOL programme first; applicants shortlisted for interview will be notified no later than 5 January 2027, with interviews held between 15 and 24 February 2027. Final outcomes are communicated no later than 4 March 2027. The Trust reserves the right not to award scholarships if suitable candidates are not found.
