The Schwarzman Scholars Program is one of the world’s most prestigious and selective graduate fellowships, supporting up to 200 outstanding young leaders annually from the United States, China, and around the world for a fully funded one-year Master’s degree in Global Affairs at Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. Inspired by the Rhodes Scholarship, the program was founded to meet the challenges of the 21st century by deepening understanding and collaboration between China and the rest of the world. Scholars are selected from an international pool of distinguished candidates who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, proven leadership ability, exemplary character, and a genuine commitment to cross-cultural engagement. Tsinghua University, where Schwarzman College is located, is one of China’s oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher learning, consistently ranked first in Asia. Founded in 1911, the university has long served as a bridge between China and the world and is situated on the former site of the Qing Dynasty imperial gardens in Beijing. The Schwarzman College building was designed by renowned architect Robert A.M. Stern and evokes the residential colleges of Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard and Yale. The program’s advisory board comprises Prime Ministers, former Presidents, Nobel Laureates, and leading executives from the public and private sectors globally.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Schwarzman Scholars Program, applicants must meet the following:
- Must hold an undergraduate degree, or be on track to complete all degree requirements before August 1, 2027
- Must be at least 18 but not yet 29 years of age as of August 1 of the enrollment year (for the Class of 2027–2028, as of August 1, 2027)
- Must demonstrate strong English language proficiency, as all teaching is conducted in English; if English is not the applicant’s native language, official proficiency test scores must be submitted (requirement waived for those who studied at an English-speaking institution for at least two years at undergraduate or graduate level)
- Minimum English proficiency scores accepted: TOEFL iBT 100/120, IELTS 7.0, Duolingo English Test 130, Cambridge Advanced (C1) or Proficiency (C2) 185
- Must be a non-Chinese citizen holding a regular passport from a country other than China (for U.S. and Global applicants)
- Applicants with Chinese citizenship (Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan) must apply through the separate China Application System
- Must demonstrate outstanding leadership abilities, exceptional character and integrity, strong academic aptitude, intercultural competency, open-mindedness, and entrepreneurial spirit

Selection Criteria
Candidates undergo a rigorous and thorough multi-stage selection process designed to identify the most promising young leaders from around the world. The process begins with an online application, which includes a resume or CV (maximum two pages), a Leadership Essay (750 words), a Statement of Purpose (500 words), two short-answer responses (100 words each), official academic transcripts for all post-secondary institutions attended, a one-minute video introduction, and three letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak directly to the applicant’s intellectual abilities, personal character, and leadership potential. Applications are reviewed by a distinguished international committee of business, government, and academic leaders. A select number of shortlisted candidates are then invited for in-person interviews, held in late October and early November before an international panel of leaders. Final selections are made based on demonstrated leadership ability, academic excellence, intercultural empathy, entrepreneurial spirit, and the potential to contribute meaningfully to global understanding and collaboration.
