The Deakin PhD Scholarship is an academic scholarship offered at the Australian National University (ANU), funded by the John Anthony Deakin Endowment. The scholarship supports domestic and international students enrolled or enrolling in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program at ANU, with a focus on Pure Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Three scholarships are available per competition, each offering a stipend of $39,069 per annum (full-time base rate 2026), paid fortnightly in arrears for up to 3.5 years, with the potential for a further 6-month extension for eligible candidates. There is no separate application — students are automatically considered based on their application for admission and meeting the eligibility criteria.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following:

  • Must be a domestic or international student (prospective or continuing)
  • Must be enrolled or enrolling in a program of study for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the Australian National University
  • Must have been awarded a Bachelor degree with first class honours, or a Master degree with a research component, or equivalent from a recognised university

Selection Criteria

Recipients are selected based on academic merit.
