Priority is given to candidates at the graduate level for dissertation-related research, awards are made in all fields, and the number of awards varies each year according to total available funds. Awards support project-related costs, including roundtrip airfare, room and board in the Nordic region, in-country travel, tuition and fees (where applicable), and materials such as books, photocopying, or art supplies.

The American-Scandinavian Foundation is a publicly supported, nonprofit organization headquartered at Scandinavia House in New York City, dedicated to promoting international understanding through educational and cultural exchange between the United States and the Nordic countries. ASF’s fellowships and grants are supported through a wide range of endowment funds established in honour of Scandinavian royalty, donors, and historical figures including the King Haakon VII Fund, the King Olav V Fund, and the Crown Princess Märtha Fellowship Fund among others reflecting the Foundation’s long-standing ties to the Nordic community.

Selection Criteria

All applications are reviewed by a multi-disciplinary panel, and applications should therefore be written to be accessible to non-experts. Applicants must complete the ASF application form, including a well-defined project description and project statement outlining their research, study, or creative-arts project and explaining why a stay in the Nordic region is essential. Three letters of recommendation are required, including one from the supervisory chair of the applicant’s MA or PhD committee where applicable. Awards are based on the application as submitted, with subsequent changes to the proposal discouraged and possibly not considered, and ASF will not provide funds if it judges that a proposal can be carried out without its assistance.
