The GREAT Scholarships are jointly funded by the UK Government’s GREAT Britain Campaign and the British Council, in partnership with participating UK higher education institutions, and are administered through the British Council’s Study UK platform. The programme offers students from 18 eligible countries the opportunity to receive £10,000 towards their tuition fees for a wide range of one-year taught postgraduate courses at over 60 universities across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. In the 2026–2027 academic year, over 140 scholarships are available. Each scholarship is offered directly by the participating university for specific courses in that institution, and applicants must apply directly to each university following the institution’s own application process. As part of the programme, all GREAT Scholars are invited to a welcome event in the first semester and a networking event in the second semester of their studies.
The British Council, founded in 1934 and headquartered in London, is the United Kingdom’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities, operating as a registered charity in England and Wales (No. 209131) and Scotland (SC037733). The British Council works in more than 100 countries and territories worldwide, connecting people with knowledge, ideas, and opportunities through arts, education, English language, and society programmes. The GREAT Scholarships are a flagship component of the British Council’s Study UK portfolio, directly supporting the UK Government’s GREAT Britain Campaign to promote the United Kingdom globally as a world-leading destination for international study.
