The Sir James McNeill Postgraduate Research Scholarship (SJMN) is funded by a private trust and was established in memory of the late Sir James McNeill, who had a long association with Monash University. This prestigious scholarship supports a graduate research student with living costs whilst studying at a Monash campus in Australia, with a focus on research that is both environmentally responsible and socially beneficial. The scholarship is awarded in the October 31 scholarship round only, and eligible applicants from Rounds 1 through 4 of the same year in which the scholarship is offered are automatically considered for nomination by the relevant faculty. No separate scholarship application is required graduate research scholarship applications are submitted at the same time as the course application through the myApp Portal, and all eligible applicants are automatically considered for all available graduate research scholarships.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:

  • Must be one of the following: an Australian citizen; a New Zealand citizen; an Australian permanent resident; an Australian humanitarian visa holder; or an international student
  • Must have submitted a scholarship application in the year the scholarship is offered
  • Must be undertaking or proposing to undertake research that is both environmentally responsible and socially beneficial
  • Must meet Monash’s competitive scholarship selection process requirements
  • Must meet Monash English language proficiency requirements
  • Research must be conducted within one of the following faculties: Faculty of Arts (School of Music only); Faculty of Engineering; Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences; or Faculty of Science
  • The scholarship is also available to students undertaking Joint Research Awards when Monash University is the home institution

Selection Criteria

Monash scholarships are highly competitive and are awarded based on academic excellence, research outputs, and prior research experience. The standard RTP Scholarship terms and conditions apply, with the exceptions outlined in the eligibility criteria. All eligible applicants from Rounds 1 through 4 of the scholarship year are automatically considered for nomination by the relevant faculty no separate selection application is required. The scholarship is awarded exclusively in the October 31 scholarship round. Eligible applicants are automatically nominated and assessed by faculty without the need for a separate application.
