The Dalhousie Research Excellence Scholarship (DRES) was established in 2024 to attract and support new Dalhousie PhD students with exceptional leadership and research potential. Award recipients represent Dalhousie’s emerging leaders, with significant regional, national, or international impacts expected from their research. PhD students may hold this scholarship for up to 48 months, but not past the end of their fourth year in the program. Recipients are also required to apply to the Tri-agency CGRS-D competition within the first two years of their PhD program, and if successful, will receive the full CGRS-D value of $40,000 per year while the DRES becomes honorary.

Benefits of the Scholarship

This scholarship will provide the following to its recipients:

  • $35,000 per year for up to four years, provided the award holder maintains eligibility
  • DRES award holders may also receive additional funding beyond the award value through stipends or other sources negotiated with their supervisor/program of study

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following:

  • Must have an intent to start (enroll in or transfer to) a PhD program at Dalhousie between January 2026 and January 2027
  • Scholarship funds will only be administered to successful applicants after they are admitted to and registered in their intended program of study
