Northwestern University’s Undergraduate Need-Based Financial Aid Programme is one of the most comprehensive in American higher education, built on a firm commitment to reducing cost as a barrier to higher education. Northwestern meets 100% of every admitted student’s demonstrated financial need, and all financial aid awards are scholarships nothing needs to be repaid. Northwestern does not award scholarships based on academic merit; instead, the university maximises assistance for students who would otherwise be unable to afford to attend. Over 60% of Northwestern undergraduates receive a financial aid package, and approximately 51% receive a Northwestern University scholarship that does not need to be repaid. Last year, Northwestern spent over $200 million on financial aid support for undergraduate students.
Northwestern University, founded in 1851 and located in Evanston, Illinois (with an additional campus in Chicago), is one of the United States’ premier private research universities and a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU). Consistently ranked among the top universities in the nation and globally, Northwestern is renowned for its excellence across a wide range of disciplines including journalism, law, medicine, business, engineering, music, the social sciences, and the natural sciences. The university is home to approximately 8,000 undergraduate students from all 50 U.S. states and more than 75 countries, and is deeply committed to ensuring that cost is never a barrier to accessing its world-class education through a robust and expanding financial aid programme.

Selection Criteria
Northwestern’s financial aid is awarded entirely on the basis of demonstrated financial need — the university does not award merit-based scholarships. Each family’s Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is determined through a careful review of the CSS Profile and FAFSA by Northwestern’s financial aid staff, taking into account income, assets, family size, taxes, and special circumstances. The financial aid package equals the difference between the total Cost of Attendance and the EFC, meeting 100% of demonstrated need. Aid packages typically include a combination of need-based scholarships, grants, and part-time work opportunities. Aid is renewed annually based on continued demonstrated need and satisfactory academic progress.
