Brown University’s Undergraduate Need-Based Financial Aid Programme is one of the most generous and comprehensive in American higher education, built on a commitment to ensuring that financial considerations never prevent talented students from joining the Brown community. Brown practices need-blind admission, meaning that an applicant’s ability or inability to pay tuition has no bearing on the admission decision. The university meets 100% of each admitted student’s demonstrated financial need. Through The Brown Promise initiative, Brown has eliminated packaged loans from all undergraduate financial aid awards — replacing them entirely with scholarships and grants that never need to be repaid. Approximately 48% of the first-year class receives need-based scholarship or grant aid, and 100% of students receiving financial aid have no loans in their financial aid packages. Most families earning less than $60,000 annually pay $0 in parent contribution.

Full tuition coverage for eligible families earning $125,000 or less with typical assets
Full cost of attendance coverage for eligible families earning less than $60,000 with typical assets
Support covering tuition, accommodation, meals, books and other eligible expenses
No loans included in Brown’s standard financial aid packages
Financial aid available to eligible international students

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:

Must be admitted to Brown University as a first-year undergraduate student — Brown’s need-blind policy applies to all first-year applicants regardless of nationality or immigration status
Must demonstrate financial need as assessed through Brown’s financial aid review process
Must complete and submit the CSS Profile (College Board CSS/Financial Aid Profile — Brown code: 3094) by the relevant deadline
Must complete and submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid — for U.S. citizens and permanent residents only — Brown code: 003401) by the relevant deadline

Selection Criteria

Brown University’s financial aid is awarded exclusively on the basis of demonstrated financial need — Brown does not offer merit-based scholarships for undergraduates. Each family’s financial situation is assessed holistically through the CSS Profile and FAFSA, taking into account family income, assets, family size, number of family members in college, and any special financial circumstances reported. Brown’s Office of Financial Aid reviews all completed applications and produces a financial aid award included with the admission decision for applicants who meet the filing deadlines. Aid packages are reviewed and renewed annually based on continued demonstrated financial need and satisfactory academic progress.
