The Caltech Graduate Financial Support Programme guarantees that all admitted full-time PhD students receive financial support covering full tuition and mandatory fees, plus a monthly stipend for living expenses, for the duration of their doctoral studies, provided they remain enrolled full-time and make satisfactory progress toward the degree including securing a thesis advisor and meeting all programme requirements. No separate application for financial aid is required; support is offered automatically as part of the PhD admission offer. Financial support can take the form of internal or external fellowships, research assistantships, teaching assistantships, or a combination thereof. Most funding sources require work authorisation as a consequence, matriculation into the PhD programme requires evidence of work authorisation, unless special compensation arrangements are made with the admitting option (division).

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must meet the following:

Must be admitted to a full-time PhD programme at Caltech
Must remain enrolled full-time throughout the programme
Must make satisfactory progress toward the doctoral degree, including securing a thesis advisor and meeting all programme requirements
Must provide evidence of work authorisation — most Caltech funding sources require work authorisation; special compensation arrangements may be made in exceptional cases
Must report to the Dean of Graduate Studies any external fellowships, scholarships, or financial aid from other sources received while enrolled at Caltech
Outside employment of more than one day (eight hours) per week requires prior written approval from the Dean of Graduate Studies
Master’s students are generally not eligible for Institute financial support — they may apply for teaching and research assistantships through their department

Selection Criteria

Caltech’s graduate financial support is not a competitive scholarship — it is automatically offered to all admitted full-time PhD students as part of the admissions process. No separate financial aid application is required. Selection for the PhD programme itself is highly competitive and is based on academic excellence, research potential, letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, and GRE or other required test scores as specified by each academic option (division). Students who are admitted to the PhD programme at Caltech are guaranteed financial support for the full duration of their studies, subject to continued satisfactory academic progress and full-time enrolment.
