The Bayreuth Humboldt Centre Starter Grants and Short Term Grants are offered by the University of Bayreuth Centre of International Excellence “Alexander von Humboldt” (Bayreuth Humboldt Centre BHC) to promote excellent research at the University of Bayreuth and advance the internationalisation of research and networking with the best universities worldwide. Both grant programmes support academic exchange across disciplinary, cultural, and national boundaries and are open to researchers from all disciplines with specific exceptions applying to African Studies host eligibility due to German Research Foundation regulations.

The University of Bayreuth (Universität Bayreuth), founded in 1975 and located in Bayreuth, Bavaria, Germany, is a research-intensive public university with particular strengths in African Studies, law and economics, materials science, ecology, and the arts. The university operates seven faculties and is home to the internationally recognised Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence, the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS), and numerous interdisciplinary research networks. Through the Bayreuth Humboldt Centre named in honour of Alexander von Humboldt, the polymath explorer and naturalist the university channels its commitment to international research excellence and cross-cultural scholarly exchange, supporting researchers from around the world in conducting collaborative projects at UBT.

Selection Criteria

Both programmes award grants through a highly competitive, strictly merit-based selection process. The all-important selection criteria are the academic excellence of both the applicant and the cooperative project reflected, for example, in high-ranking publications as well as the potential for networking with the University of Bayreuth beyond the local host. The BHC views diversity among its awardees as an asset and is expressly committed to gender equality; female scholars and researchers who can help diversify UBT’s research profile are strongly encouraged to apply.
